A day at the Dappermarkt by Romina Oliverio

If you’re an early riser and live in this part of town, chances are you wake up to the sounds of the merchants setting up the market stalls of the renowned Dappermarkt. A day at the DappermarktThe activity in the market is buzzing as dawn breaks. Clanking of metal is heard as poles for the stalls are raised up; tent fabric rustles in the wind as it’s stretched onto the poles; command orders are yelled from one worker to the other as they unload the cargo to be later displayed attractively for the masses of potential buyers.

Dapper Market best daily street market in the netherlands 2007 / 2008

Partytime in the Dapper neighbourhood – Everyone joins in as 1!

The Netherland’s best daily street market 2007 and 2008 treated the neighbours, the merchants and the visitors, of the Market to a an incredible street (market) party on wednesday the 9th of April ‘08.

It was a heartwarming feeling on a brilliant day in the warmth of the noonday sun. The baton was passed to the Dapper youth. The market of the future commenced on the 9th of April 2008. Young Muiderpoorttheater MC Leroy talked and held us all together. In cooperation with the Dapper neighbourhood’s Muiderpoorttheater there was a fantastically, organic, multi cultural programme of song, dance & music. Dapper Neighbourhood’s Youth on the Stage and in the Dapper Market Square strutted their infectious, multi culti Dapper fusion stuff! Fun was had by all ages! The Dapper Market’s Merry Sexton joined in and rocked the square with a thunderous version of Louis Prima’s “Buena Sera” .

The unveiling of Donovan (Faith71) Spaanstra’s World Market on Wheels Graffiti project was a true “happening” with a creative “clinic” for the Dapper youth. The musical part of the program ended with Mystery Guest and super young (12 year old) Dapper talent: Soufian who shook the Dapper ‘hood with his Hip Hop and “Beatbox” .  At the end of the show the wildly enthusiastic crowd did not want to leave the square. When asked: “don’t you have a home to go to?” Hundreds of neighbourhood kids yelled at the top of their voices: “Our Home is the Dapper Market !” This afternoon it was a sunny, warm home where all are welcome: young, old, thick, thin, tall, short  or purple with white dots. A market square where six days a week everyone can feel as 1. See you later at Dapper Square. It is truly is magical!

Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen sops at Dapper Market

Dapper Square centre of the universe

For a couple of hours Dapper Square was the centre of the universe on Wednesday 7 March 2007. It was party time for the neighbourhood and the market! A super enthusiastic citizen fatherJob Cohen arrived early and immediately joined the celebration. Borough Oost / Watergraafsmeer Chairman Martin Verbeet warmly welcomed the mayor. It quickly became clear that this victory is more than a success for the market and the Dapperbuurt. All of Amsterdam and the Netherlands joined in. Or, as the headline on the front page of national financial daily “Het Financieele Dagblad” of Tuesday 6 March 2007 declared: “Dapper Market is integration in action.”

The organic Muiderpoorttheater show that followed was simply delicious. We saw Justus Explode, (a girl streetdancegroup, Indian dancer Madan (aptly called the “King of Bollywood”). One Root & The Melodies gave us contagious contemporary reggae. Rene Riva came along. The ever growing song of life about the Dapperbuurt was a hit. Super Soundman Ben Sproet’s version of You’ll never walk alonerang like bell, and a shower of golden rain came down. One TwoTrio raised the sky. And the Champage started to flow. And Bakery Perlo’s already famous Perlo Dappertjes pastries were served. The Dapper Market’s own Bertus the Merry Sexton got the snakedance going! The Dapper virus has been unleashed.  Oh Joy!!

Today’s really authentic Amsterdam market is the Dapper Market

Popular, also according to current criteria, amongst recent immigrant merchants, who serve new Amsterdammers *. And more than that, the Dapper Market is a warm market. The merchants play an all important role in the success of

the Dapper market. Cheese merchant Fred Koster (“ for eleven years I worked other markets, and I almost died on my feet”). Fishmonger Frans Jansen, whose great-grandmother already sold fish from a basket more than a 100 years ago, and who is an Egyptologist in his free time. Souffian ell Marsse, who sells delicatessen, and who also has a brokerage certificate. Peter van den Bosch, who was able to take over his father’s vegetable stall when dad turned seventy. Potato Merchant Tonnie Koster – whose family already occupy  a stall on the market for three generations. Just to name a few…
